Paying the Cost To Be the Boss – Making the Most Out of Summer Break

The end of the school year is fast approaching.  As we all prepare to peel off all of our cold weather layers and slip into flip flops and tank tops, we should keep in mind that while summer is a period of fun and relaxation, it should also be a time for making moves and hustlin’.

Internships: While the initial thought of working for no pay is a major turnoff, interning in your field of interest has the potential to provide you with  invaluable experience in an environment that closely mirrors what a career in that industry is like.  Many people turn their noses up at internships, with many seeing it as a fancy term for a file clerk or errand boy (or girl) but the wise, industrious student will make a lasting impression on lifelong contacts while getting hands on, entry – level exposure.

Summer Jobs:  We all like to make money!  Those glorious two months of summer vacation can be an opportune time for you to save money for books and other education expenses.  Think about it- if you put aside just 5o bucks a weeks for 12 weeks, you would have $600 in your bank account by the time the school year rolls around.  The thought of splurging on a few dinners at a nice restaurant when you want a break from the food in the cafe should be enough incentive for you.

Exercising: Bike riding, swimming, beach vollyball- the possibilites for getting in shape and staying fit are endless!  Take advantage of the good weather by taking a stroll around your neighborhood park or putting together a game of manhunt with  your friends.

Volunteering:  Getting involved in your community is a great way to give back to the village that raised you.  Much like an internship, the right volunteer opportunity has the potential to give you valuable work experience in your desired career field.  Added bonus?  Involvement in community projects looks great on your graduate school application.

Visiting Graduate Schools:  Speaking of which, take the time to meet with the department head of various graduate schools and take a copy of your transcript with you.  Learn what you need to do in order to make your grad school application stand out  and make your presence known to the admissions counselors.
