Dr. Ronald E. McNair
Another A&T Alum who made history is astronaut Ronald E. McNair. McNair graduated from North Carolina A&T with a bachelor’s in physics in 1971.  In 1976, he received his Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology becoming nationally recognized for his work in the field of laser physics. On February 3 1984 he became the 2nd African American to fly in space aboard The Challenger: STS-41-B.  Unfortunately Dr. McNair is most known for his second attempt into space.  He and six crew members lost their lives on the space shuttle Challenger: STS-51-L on January 28, 1986. In memory of Dr. McNair and all his accomplishments A&T erected the Ronald E. McNair Engineering building and placed a statue bust of him outside of it.
